Writing Is Not An Alibi

Hello there! Just in case somebody were wondering whether I’d been kidnapped by aliens or something lately, here’s what I occupied myself today: stretching a pair of shoes with SCIENCE, and starting playing Skyrim again.

Some other news:
- my job obliterated my free time again during May, and I’m only catching my breath now
- I’ve been eating a probably unhealthy quantity of sushi lately and when me and The Guy come in, the sushi cook makes a worried face and goes fishing
- I want to keep baking on weekends but spring is actually kicking in now and it’s hot to play with the oven
- I still have recipes to post and I will post them
- I will let you know if I manage to stretch the stupid shoes because they’re awfully cute but they hurt like a dickens and even I’m not that hardcore
- I decided to take part in the Homestuck Shipping World Cup with Team Eridan/Feferi/Sollux! So yeah, I guess you could say I was actually kidnapped by aliens, only in a dorky and entertaining way.

Just when I was starting to worry about its fate, my Homestuck Kickstarter package finally arrived! The poster is a real beauty and now adorns my old bedroom at my parents’ house. I am the star. It is me.

DasteRoad’s Homestuck cake - a variation of the 7 Jars Cake (originally learnt from awesome tumblr user thecrqueen!)

The original cake’s name comes from those small 125g yogurt jars, which you will need as you’ll be (a) using the yogurt as an ingredient, and (b) using the jar as a unit of measure. One of those jars roughly corresponds to 1/2 cup in wacky Yankee units.

Ingredients:

• 1 jar of whole yogurt (125g serving or 1/4 lbs)
• 2 jars of sugar (even better if it’s brown sugar)
• 3 jars of flour 
• 1 jar of oilseed (or 60g - 1/8 lbs - of butter)
• 1/2 jar of milk
• 3 eggs
• 50 g of unsweetened cocoa (1/8 lbs)
• 100 g of chocolate chips (1/4 lbs)
• 1 bag of yeast (16g)
• 1 bag of vanilla flavouring powder
• As much confectioners’ sugar as you wish for the final touch.

Things you need:

• the 125g yogurt jar, yogurt included, or I have no idea what you think you’re doing
• one of those handy dandy cake pan thingies with the openable belt, like in the picture
• a sieve
• some non-stick oven paper always helps
• a working oven (this is kind of important).

How to do the yummy:

1. Turn on the oven to 180°C (365°F). If you’re using butter instead of oilseed, you can melt it in a ceramic container while the oven is heating up.
2. Cover the bottom of the cake pan with a sheet of non-stick oven paper. This is optional but highly recommended if you don’t want to risk an evening of working cake remains off metal.
3. In a bowl, cream together the eggs (one at a time), the yogurt and the oilseed (or butter). Then stir in the vanilla flavouring powder, the sugar, cocoa and flour, one jar at a time. You can add a bit of milk as the batter becomes dry and hard to work, but save the most of it for next step.
4. In the jar, mix together the milk and the yeast, carefully stirring until the granules dissolve and you get a foamy mixture. Then add it to the batter and stir until it all becomes smooth and tempting.
5. Fail to resist the urge to eat the batter raw. Again, this is optional, but it works for me.
6. As a last thing, add the chocolate chips to the batter, then scoop it in the cake pan.
7. Put the pan in the oven and find something productive to do for the next 40 minutes.
8. Do not open the oven door before 40 minutes have passed or the evil yeast gnomes could screw up the leavening for you. I’m not joking. Gnomes are nasty little shits.
9. After 40 minutes, check if the cake is ready with a toothpick, and in case it isn’t, leave it in the oven another 5 minutes and repeat the test.
10. When it’s ready, turn off the oven, take out the pan and pour confectioners’ sugar over the delicious cake to your heart’s content, using a sieve to keep it homogeneous. If you’re a Homestuck and you have some time to lose, you can draw the Sburb logo or whatever else strikes your fandom fancy on some thin paper and cut out the shape to use the sheet as a filter to make a cute and nerdy sugar drawing on your cake.
11. EAT THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS OUT OF THAT SHIT. Sharing is optional.
